Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist for Oklahoma Homeowners

Just finished a renovation? Post-construction cleaning is a different beast than regular house cleaning. Here is exactly what needs to happen before you move back in.

Finishing a home renovation in Oklahoma City, Edmond, or anywhere in the OKC metro is exciting until you look around at the construction dust coating every surface, the drywall compound on the baseboards, and the debris that somehow found its way into every cabinet. Post-construction cleaning is a specialized job, and it is significantly more involved than a standard house clean.

Why Post-Construction Cleaning Is Different

Construction dust is not like regular household dust. It is finer, heavier, and gets into places that normal cleaning does not reach: inside HVAC vents, behind outlet covers, inside cabinets, under appliances, and deep into carpet fibers. Post-construction cleaning requires HEPA-filtered vacuums, microfiber cloths that trap fine particles rather than spreading them, and a systematic approach that works from the ceiling down.

Phase 1: Rough Clean

The rough clean happens immediately after the last contractor leaves. It focuses on removing the bulk of the debris: sweeping and vacuuming all surfaces, removing construction materials and packaging, clearing out sawdust and drywall chunks, and doing a first pass on windows and frames. This is not the final clean. It is clearing the field so the detail work can happen.

Phase 2: Detail Clean

The detail clean is where post-construction cleaning gets serious. Every surface needs to be addressed in a specific order, always top to bottom, always working toward the exit. Ceilings and walls: wipe down all ceiling surfaces, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and wall surfaces. Windows and frames: construction leaves adhesive residue, paint overspray, and dust on every window surface. Cabinets and built-ins: wipe inside and outside every cabinet and drawer. Bathrooms: scrub tile, grout, fixtures, and all surfaces. Floors: vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA-filtered vacuum before mopping. HVAC vents and returns: vacuum all vents and returns.

Oklahoma-Specific Considerations

Oklahoma high winds mean construction dust can be blown back into a space even after cleaning if windows or doors are left open. Oklahoma humidity swings can cause wood dust to swell and stick to surfaces differently. And if your renovation happened during spring, pollen has almost certainly mixed with the construction dust, creating a particularly stubborn combination.

When to Hire a Professional

Post-construction cleaning is one of the few types of cleaning where professional help is almost always worth it. The specialized equipment, the systematic approach, and the time investment make it a poor fit for DIY, especially when you are already exhausted from managing a renovation. At Blank Space Cleaning, our post-construction cleaning service starts at $0.25/sq ft and covers everything on this checklist.
