Kelly's "Capitol" Vision: The Ultimate Cleaning Dream at the Oklahoma State Capitol

Every cleaner has a dream job — the one that makes you stop and think, "Imagine getting to clean THAT." For Kelly, owner of Blank Space Cleaning, that dream is the Oklahoma State Capitol. Here's a room-by-room tour of what it would take to make this OKC landmark truly sparkle.

Every professional cleaner has a dream job. The one that makes you pause mid-scrub, look up from the baseboards, and think — "Imagine getting to clean THAT."

For me, Kelly — owner of Blank Space Cleaning here in Oklahoma City — that dream is the Oklahoma State Capitol.

I've driven past it a hundred times. I've admired it from the outside on a clear blue OKC morning. And I've thought about it the way I think about every space I walk into: What would it take to make this absolutely spotless?

So today, I'm walking you through my Capitol cleaning vision — room by room, detail by detail. Because a building this beautiful deserves nothing less than a truly professional clean. And honestly? It's a fun way to show you exactly how I think about cleaning any large, high-detail space — whether it's a historic landmark or your home in Edmond.

First Impression: The Grand Exterior

Before you even walk through the doors, the Capitol makes a statement. The neoclassical columns, the wide brick plaza, the dome rising against that big Oklahoma sky — it's genuinely breathtaking. On a clear day, the limestone facade practically glows.

From a cleaning perspective, a building exterior like this is all about preservation and presentation. The plaza stonework, the column bases, the entry steps — these surfaces see thousands of visitors every year. Maintaining them means regular pressure washing with pH-neutral solutions that clean without etching the stone, careful attention to the iron railings and hardware, and making sure the entry is always welcoming.

First impressions matter — whether it's a state capitol or your front door. That's something I believe deeply in every home I clean.

The Rotunda: Oklahoma's Crown Jewel

The Capitol rotunda — those murals, that dome, that marble. A cleaner's dream and a challenge worth rising to.

Walk through those doors and look up. The rotunda is extraordinary.

The dome murals, the coffered ceiling details, the warm golden walls, the marble balustrade curving around the upper gallery — this is the kind of space that makes you hold your breath. The murals tell the story of Oklahoma's history, painted in rich blues, golds, and reds that have been carefully restored over the years.

Cleaning a space like this requires a completely different mindset than your average room. You're not just removing dirt — you're protecting art. Every surface has to be approached with the right product and the right technique. The marble floors require pH-neutral cleaners and regular polishing to maintain their reflective shine without etching the stone. The gilded details on the ceiling and walls need dry dusting with soft natural-fiber brushes — never anything abrasive, never anything wet.

The rotunda also has incredible natural light from the dome windows, which means every smudge on the marble and every dust particle on the upper railings is visible. In a space like this, there's no hiding imperfect work. You either clean it right, or it shows.

The Rotunda Balcony: Where the Details Live

Looking up from the rotunda balcony — every cornice, every medallion, every painted surface tells a story worth preserving.

From the balcony level, you can see just how much detail went into this building. The Greek key border running around the rotunda, the rosette medallions in the ceiling, the arched doorways with their carved keystones — every inch was designed with intention.

This is where I'd spend a significant amount of time. Detail work at height requires patience, the right tools (extension dusters, soft-bristle brushes, microfiber cloths), and a systematic approach. You work from the highest point down, so that any displaced dust falls onto surfaces you haven't cleaned yet — never back onto something you've already finished.

It's the same principle I use in every home I clean. Top to bottom, always. It sounds simple, but it's the difference between a clean that lasts and one that looks great for five minutes.

The Guardian: Oklahoma's Native American Statue

The Guardian — a powerful bronze statue honoring Oklahoma's Native American heritage, standing watch in the Capitol rotunda.

Standing in the rotunda is one of the Capitol's most powerful pieces: a bronze statue honoring Oklahoma's Native American heritage. The figure stands tall, holding a spear and shield, surrounded by the warm glow of the rotunda lights reflecting off the polished marble floor below.

Bronze statuary requires specialized care. The patina — that rich, dark finish on the bronze — is actually a protective layer that develops over time and should never be scrubbed away. Proper bronze care means gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth, occasional cleaning with a mild soap solution applied carefully, and the application of a protective wax to prevent oxidation.

I find this kind of work deeply satisfying. There's something meaningful about caring for an object that carries this much history and cultural significance. You approach it with respect, and you leave it better than you found it.

The Senate Chamber Lobby: Art Meets Architecture

Oklahoma State Capitol Senate Chamber lobby with ornate murals, historic oil painting on arched ceiling, dark wood doors, and red velvet furniture
The Senate Chamber lobby — the mural above the doors, the paintings on either side, the deep red carpet. Every surface here is a statement.

Step into the Senate Chamber lobby and you're immediately surrounded by Oklahoma's story. The arched mural above the Senate Chamber doors — depicting Oklahoma's oil industry heritage — anchors the room. Historic paintings flank either side. The deep red carpet, the dark wood furniture, the ornate plasterwork — this room was designed to impress, and it absolutely does.

For a room like this, cleaning is about preservation of atmosphere. The carpet requires careful vacuuming with the right attachment to lift dust without disturbing the pile. The upholstered furniture needs regular attention — fabric attracts dust and allergens, and the deep red velvet shows every particle of lint. The paintings and murals are dusted only with museum-grade soft brushes, never touched with any liquid.

The dark wood doors and trim are polished with a product appropriate for the finish — you'd be surprised how many people use the wrong cleaner on wood and strip the finish right off. I always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Always.

The Senate Chamber Floor: Where Oklahoma's Laws Are Made

Oklahoma State Capitol Senate Chamber floor with rows of dark wood desks on ornate patterned carpet, viewed from the gallery above
The Senate Chamber floor — rows of dark wood desks, intricate patterned carpet, and the weight of Oklahoma's legislative history in every corner.

From the gallery above, the Senate Chamber floor is a stunning sight. Rows of dark wood desks arranged in a semicircle, each one a workspace where Oklahoma's laws are debated and decided. The patterned carpet, the high ceilings, the gallery railings, the speaker's dais at the front — this is a room that carries real weight.

Cleaning a legislative chamber requires precision and discretion. Every desk surface needs to be wiped down carefully — these are working spaces with documents, electronics, and personal items. The carpet is vacuumed in careful rows to maintain the pile direction. The gallery railings and seating are dusted and wiped. The speaker's dais and podium are polished.

What strikes me most about a room like this is the responsibility of the work. When you clean a space where important decisions are made, you're contributing — in a small but real way — to the environment where those decisions happen. A clean, well-maintained space supports clear thinking. I believe that in every home I clean, and I'd believe it here too.

The Oil Derrick: Oklahoma's Outdoor Icon

The Capitol's oil derrick — a nod to the industry that built Oklahoma, standing tall against that big blue OKC sky.

Step outside and you'll find one of the Capitol grounds' most distinctive features: a historic oil derrick, a nod to the petroleum industry that shaped Oklahoma's economy and identity. The Phillips 66 sign on the tower is a reminder of just how central oil has been to this state's story.

Outdoor metal structures like this require a different kind of care — rust prevention, structural cleaning, and protection from Oklahoma's weather extremes. From the ice storms of January to the scorching heat of August, this derrick weathers it all. Regular inspection, cleaning, and protective coating keep it standing proud for generations to come.

It's also just a great photo op. 📸

What This Dream Teaches Me About Every Clean

Walking through the Capitol — even just in my imagination — reminds me of something I believe in every single job I do for clients across Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman, and Yukon:

Every space deserves to be treated like it matters.

Whether it's the Oklahoma State Capitol rotunda or your kitchen in Edmond, the principles are the same: work top to bottom, use the right product for the right surface, pay attention to the details that most people skip, and leave the space better than you found it.

That's not just how I'd clean the Capitol. That's how I clean every home and business I walk into.

If you'd like to experience that level of care in your own space — whether it's a deep clean, a move-out clean, recurring maintenance, or a commercial clean — I'd love to help.
